Question 1

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

Accepted Answer

Many domestic installations fall under permitted development, provided the outdoor unit meets certain size, siting and noise conditions. It depends on the property and location — listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and commercial premises often have different rules. We will advise during the survey and recommend checking with your local planning authority where needed.

Question 2

I live in a flat. Can I still have air conditioning?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes, but flats are not usually covered by the same permitted development rights as houses, and you may need consent from your freeholder or managing agent. We will help you understand what to ask for.

Question 3

What about listed buildings and conservation areas?

Accepted Answer

These usually need extra care and may require consent. Indoor and outdoor unit positions, pipe routes and visual impact all matter. We will discuss the options and the approvals you are likely to need before any work is planned.

Question 4

Will the outdoor unit bother my neighbours?

Accepted Answer

Modern outdoor units are relatively quiet, and we choose positions with sound, airflow and neighbouring properties in mind. Where noise limits apply, we will take them into account in the design.

Question 5

How long does an installation take?

Accepted Answer

A single wall-mounted system in a home is often completed within a day. Multi-room, ducted and commercial projects take longer and depend on access and pipe routes. You will receive a clear schedule with your quote.

Question 6

How much mess is involved?

Accepted Answer

Some drilling is unavoidable, but we use dust sheets and protection, clean as we go and leave the space as we found it.

Question 7

Where can the indoor and outdoor units go?

Accepted Answer

There is usually more than one option. Indoor units need clear airflow and a sensible condensate route; outdoor units need ventilation, a stable fixing and access for servicing. We will talk through the trade-offs at survey.

Question 8

Do I need to be at home during installation?

Accepted Answer

Someone needs to be available at the start and for the handover at the end. In between, we just need access to the rooms and the outdoor position.

Question 9

How much does air conditioning cost?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the number of rooms, the type of system, the equipment chosen and the installation route. After the survey you will receive a fixed, itemised quote, so there are no surprises.

Question 10

What does it cost to run?

Accepted Answer

Running costs depend on the size of the space, insulation, how you use the system and your energy tariff. Modern inverter systems are highly efficient, and we size each system to your rooms so it does not work harder than it needs to.

Question 11

Why does correct sizing matter?

Accepted Answer

An oversized system cycles on and off and can feel uncomfortable; an undersized one runs flat out and still struggles. A heat-load calculation helps us choose the capacity each room actually needs.

Question 12

Is the quote really fixed?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for the scope described in it. If something unexpected comes up that changes the work, we will explain it and agree any change with you before going ahead.

Question 13

Can air conditioning heat as well as cool?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most modern systems are reverse-cycle air-to-air heat pumps. They cool in summer and can heat efficiently in cooler months, often as a primary or supplementary heat source.

Question 14

Does it work when it is cold outside?

Accepted Answer

Heat pumps continue to work in cold weather, though output and efficiency vary with outdoor temperature and model. We select equipment with suitable performance for UK winters.

Question 15

Can it replace my boiler?

Accepted Answer

An air-to-air system heats the air in rooms but does not provide hot water, so it is usually used alongside existing heating. Whether it could be your main room heating depends on the property — we will give you an honest view.

Question 16

Is an air-to-air heat pump eligible for grants?

Accepted Answer

Eligibility for schemes changes over time and often differs between air-to-air and air-to-water systems. We recommend checking current government guidance; we are happy to talk it through.

Question 17

Does the system need servicing?

Accepted Answer

Regular servicing keeps a system efficient, quiet and reliable, and is usually required to maintain manufacturer warranties. We typically recommend an annual service, with filter cleaning in between.

Question 18

Can I clean the filters myself?

Accepted Answer

Usually, yes. Most indoor units have washable filters that lift out easily. We will show you how at handover.

Question 19

What warranty will I have?

Accepted Answer

Warranty terms depend on the manufacturer and are often conditional on registration and regular servicing. Your quote will set out the warranty for the equipment we propose.

Question 20

Do you service systems you did not install?

Accepted Answer

In many cases, yes. Get in touch with the make, model and age of your system and we will let you know.

Question 21

Can you work outside business hours?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Evening, weekend or phased working can usually be arranged to keep disruption to a minimum.

Question 22

Do you install VRF/VRV systems?

Accepted Answer

We can design and install systems suited to multi-zone commercial spaces, including VRF/VRV, depending on the project. We will recommend the approach that fits your building.

Question 23

Are there legal requirements for commercial systems?

Accepted Answer

Depending on the type and quantity of refrigerant, some systems require periodic leak checks and records under F-Gas regulations. We will explain what applies to your system.
